Worked example

Find the area and perimeter of a rectangle 8 cm long and 5 cm wide.

1.
The area of a rectangle is its length multiplied by its width.
```
A = l × w = 8 × 5 = 40 cm²
```
2.
The perimeter is the distance all the way round: two lengths plus two widths.
```
P = 2(l + w) = 2(8 + 5) = 2 × 13 = 26 cm
```

Answer: Area = 40 cm² · Perimeter = 26 cm
