Linear Equation Solver
Solves an equation with one unknown where the unknown is never squared or divided into. Brackets, fractions, decimals and terms on both sides all work. Every transformation is shown, and the answer is verified by substituting it back in.

Worked example
Solve 3(x − 2) = 9.
- 1.
Start with the equation as written.
3(x - 2) = 9
- 2.
Expand the brackets by multiplying everything inside by the number outside.
3x − 6 = 9
- 3.
Add the constant to both sides so only the x-term is left.
3x = 15
- 4.
Divide both sides by 3, the number in front of x.
x = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
- 5.
Check the answer by substituting it back into the original equation.
Left = 9, Right = 9 ✓
Answer: x = 5
Note: One variable, x, to the first power only. Equations with x² go to the Quadratic Equation Solver.
