Worked example

Work out 12.5 ÷ (−4).

1.
Write the division as a fraction.

25/2 ÷ -4 = 25/2 / -4
```

Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (flip it over).

25/2 × 1/-4
```

Cancel any common factor so the fraction is in lowest terms.

= -25/8
```

As a decimal.

= -3.125
```
